Getting started with personal finances

Set up a personal workspace for you or your household, upload your bank and card statements, and see where your money goes each month.

Create a personal workspace

  1. On the sign-up page, under "What are you keeping the books for?", choose Personal (individual or household).
  2. Choose your plan and your filing status, fill in your name, email, password, currency and time zone, then click "Create Account".
  3. Enter the 6-digit code we email you and click "Verify".
  4. On "You're all set", click "Maybe later" to go straight on, or "Set up two-factor authentication" to protect your sign-in first. You can also turn it on later in Settings → Security.
Tip: Already have a business workspace? Open your name menu at the top right and choose "Add workspace" to keep personal money separate from the business.

Answer a few setup questions

Next, Sumqo asks a few questions about how you'll use Sumqo, so it shows only what you need.

  1. Pick what fits: Household budget, Side income or Rentals. Then click "Next".
  2. On the next screen, turn on what applies, then click "See my setup".
  3. Check the list of what will be on and click "Finish setup". Or click "Skip for now" to keep the household setup.
Tip: Side income and Rentals also turn on invoicing, so you can bill your clients or tenants and record what they pay.

What is already on

A personal workspace starts with Banking, Spending, Documents, Taxes and Reports turned on, so you can begin with your bank and card statements right away.

To show or hide an area, open Settings → Modules and turn it on or off. Turning a module off never deletes your data.

Bring in your statements

  1. Go to Banking and click "New Account" for each checking, savings and credit card account.
  2. Open the account and click "Upload statement". A bank file (OFX, QFX or QBO) is best; PDFs, photos, CSV and Excel work too.
  3. Go to Banking → "Review transactions" and give each line a category, or exclude the ones that do not belong (like a transfer between your own accounts).

See where your money goes

Open Spending in the sidebar. The Overview tab shows money in and out by month, your savings rate, top categories and what you pay every month. The more months you upload, the better the picture.

  • Spending → Dashboards: build your own page of charts.
  • Documents: keep receipts, bills and other papers you may need later. Click "Upload documents", or open "Email receipts" to forward them from your email.
